DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Maui Jim Stingray MJ103 sunglasses deliver the kind of optical performance that turns first-time buyers into lifelong fans. Inspired by the gentle stingrays that glide through Hawaiian waters, this mid-sized wrap frame combines serious sun protection with an understated rectangular silhouette that works equally well on the water, behind the wheel, or anywhere glare is a problem.

PolarizedPlus2 Technology: The Maui Jim Difference

Every pair of Stingray sunglasses features Maui Jim's patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology—and this is where the brand separates itself from the competition. These lenses don't just darken your view; they eliminate 99.9% of glare, block 100% of harmful UV rays, and use a proprietary blend of three rare earth elements to enhance red, green, and blue wavelengths. The result is color that looks more vivid than real life, with contrast and clarity that has to be seen to be believed.

The Stingray is available with SuperThin Glass lenses—32% thinner and lighter than standard glass—offering the absolute crispest optics available with superior scratch resistance. Each lens includes anti-reflective coating on the back surface to eliminate bounce-back glare, plus oleophobic and hydrophobic treatments that make water, sweat, and fingerprints bead up and roll off.

Two Lens Options for Different Conditions

Choose Neutral Grey for the highest light reduction (ideal for bright, direct sunlight, boating, or driving) or HCL Bronze for a warm, high-contrast tint that enhances depth perception in variable light—from overcast to full sun. Both feature Maui Jim's signature bi-gradient mirror that's darker at the top and bottom, reducing squinting by blocking the brightest light from above and below.

Built for Active Lifestyles

The Stingray's durable acetate frame is lightweight, hypoallergenic, and saltwater-safe. Wider temples provide excellent coverage and stability, while embedded non-slip silicone nose pads keep the frames optically aligned even during high-output activities. Spring hinges gently hug the head for a secure, comfortable fit that lasts all day. At 56mm lens width, 21mm bridge, and 125mm temples, the Stingray fits small to medium faces with a subtle wrap that blocks peripheral light without feeling bulky.

The frame is prescription-ready—96% of Maui Jim sunglasses can be fitted with custom prescription lenses through authorized optical retailers, so you don't have to choose between vision correction and world-class sun protection.

"I've been wearing the Stingray model every sunny day for probably five years." — Zappos customer review

Made in Italy with nickel-silver alloy hinges for strength and corrosion resistance, the Stingray includes a protective case and cleaning cloth. Whether you're fishing, driving, or just need reliable everyday sunglasses that won't let you down, the MJ103 offers the versatility and optical performance Maui Jim is known for.

Great product really beat up packaging upon arrival!

The sunglasses were great, but the packaging was poor and upon arrival it was really beat up, looking like it had been kicked around. My suggestion will be to get better stronger exterior box packaging.

Maui Jim sunglasses

I have had Maui Jim sunglasses for decades!
A new puppy got hold of mine and destroyed them. I couldn't replace last ones...they had been discontinued. The customer service at Designer Optics helped me to find a similar pair. It took a few weeks, but I am very happy with my order. It would have been better if they were just a little faster in getting orders out. But, I'm happy with what I got, and they were very helpful.

So many bad reviews. While they did not have them in stock they came in a timely manor. Just barely by the shipping I paid for. Priority mail 2-7days it came on the 7th business day. Saved almost $100 on the glass since i ordered through them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Maui Jim Stingray sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the Maui Jim Stingray MJ103 can be fitted with prescription lenses. Since prescription lenses are considered a medical device, they must be ordered through an authorized Maui Jim optical retailer or eye care professional. Most Maui Jim styles (96%) are available with single vision or progressive prescription lenses featuring the same PolarizedPlus2 technology.

What is the difference between Neutral Grey and HCL Bronze lenses?

Neutral Grey is Maui Jim's darkest lens, offering the highest light reduction (ideal for bright, direct sunlight, boating, and water activities). HCL Bronze (High Contrast Lens) provides a warm tint that enhances contrast and depth perception, making it more versatile for variable light conditions from overcast to full sun. Both lenses feature PolarizedPlus2 technology with 99.9% glare elimination and 100% UV protection.

What size face do Maui Jim Stingray sunglasses fit?

The Stingray MJ103 is designed for small to medium faces. The frame measures 56mm lens width, 21mm bridge width, 36mm lens height, and 125mm temple length. The mid-sized wrap design provides excellent coverage without feeling oversized, and the spring hinges and adjustable nose pads help accommodate different face shapes.

What is Maui Jim PolarizedPlus2 technology?

PolarizedPlus2 is Maui Jim's patented lens technology that goes beyond basic polarization. It eliminates 99.9% of glare, blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays, and uses a blend of three rare earth elements to enhance red, green, and blue light waves for vivid color and exceptional clarity. Each lens also includes anti-reflective coating, scratch resistance, and oleophobic/hydrophobic treatments for easy cleaning.

Are Maui Jim Stingray sunglasses good for water sports and fishing?

Yes, the Stingray is excellent for water activities. The frame and lens treatments are saltwater-safe, and the polarized lenses eliminate glare from water surfaces. The wrap design provides superior coverage, while non-slip silicone nose pads keep the frames secure during active use. Many customers specifically choose the Neutral Grey lens for fishing and boating due to its high glare reduction.

What warranty does Maui Jim offer on the Stingray sunglasses?

Maui Jim offers a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects for the Stingray sunglasses. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear or damage from abuse. Maui Jim also provides competitive lens replacement and repair services through their repair department. Most nose pad replacements are sent directly to customers for free.

Maui Jim Stingray MJ103 vs. Local Kine MJ810 vs. Ho'okipa MJ407

If you're considering the Maui Jim Stingray MJ103, you're likely drawn to its mid-sized wrap design, exceptional optics, and versatility for both active and everyday wear. Here's how it compares to two other popular Maui Jim models in our collection.

Stingray MJ103 vs. Local Kine MJ810

Both the Stingray and the Local Kine MJ810 feature wrap designs with excellent coverage and the same PolarizedPlus2 lens technology. They're priced similarly ($207-$223 for the Stingray, $200-$222 for the Local Kine), making this a choice based primarily on frame shape and fit preference. The Stingray's rectangular silhouette tends to suit small to medium faces with a more understated look, while the Local Kine may offer a different temple width or bridge fit. Both are prescription-ready and saltwater-safe, so your decision comes down to which frame geometry feels better on your face.

Stingray MJ103 vs. Ho'okipa MJ407

The Ho'okipa MJ407 is one of Maui Jim's most popular models and comes in at a lower price point ($165-$176). It delivers the same world-class PolarizedPlus2 optics and UV protection as the Stingray, but with a different frame design that may offer less wrap coverage. If you prioritize maximum peripheral protection and a secure fit for high-output activities, the Stingray's wider temples and more pronounced wrap give it an edge. If you want proven Maui Jim quality at a more accessible price and don't need as much coverage, the Ho'okipa is an excellent choice.

Why Choose the Stingray?

The Stingray MJ103 hits a sweet spot: it's more affordable than Maui Jim's premium models but offers superior coverage and a refined wrap design that works for both outdoor adventures and daily wear. The mid-sized fit accommodates a wide range of face shapes, and the choice between Neutral Grey and HCL Bronze lenses gives you flexibility for different light conditions. If you want a versatile, do-everything sunglass with optical performance that rivals anything on the market, the Stingray delivers.
